8 Carpet Cleaning Methods That No One Ever Told You

Let’s face it — your carpet sees more action than your front door. Muddy shoes, pet drama, spilled wine, and whatever that mysterious smell is… it’s all in the fibers. And while vacuuming like a maniac is great cardio, it doesn’t cut it. That’s where these lesser-known, weirdly effective carpet cleaning methods come in.

1. The Ice Cube Gum Trick

Stepped in gum and tracked it into your living room like it’s 2003? Freeze it. Literally. Place an ice cube on the gum for a minute or two, then gently scrape it off with a butter knife. Finish with a dab of dish soap and warm water. Like magic.

2. The Shaving Cream Hack

Believe it or not, basic white shaving cream (not gel) is a stain-fighting beast. Apply, let it sit for 30 minutes, then blot with a dry cloth and finish with vinegar-water spray. Stains don’t stand a chance.

3. Baking Soda + Essential Oils = Deodorizing Gold

Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Sprinkle it across your carpet, let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum. Your nose will think it’s walking through a spa.

4. Squeegee for Pet Hair

Vacuums leave behind more pet hair than they should admit. Use a regular ol’ window squeegee to “rake” the carpet. It pulls up a shocking amount of fur.

5. Steam Clean with Vinegar

Don’t have carpet shampoo? Fill your steam cleaner with a mix of half white vinegar and half hot water. It deep cleans, kills odors, and makes you feel like a domestic god/goddess. Just be sure to rinse with plain water after.

6. Ironing Out Stains

Spray a stain with a 1:3 vinegar-to-water mix, place a damp cloth over it, then iron on steam setting for 30 seconds. The stain transfers to the towel like a magic trick you won’t stop telling people about.

7. DIY Dry Carpet Cleaner

Mix 2 cups baking soda, ½ cup cornstarch, and a few teaspoons of borax. Sprinkle generously, leave it for a few hours, then vacuum. Great for quick refreshes and weird smells you can’t identify.

8. Club Soda for… Everything?

Club soda isn’t just a party trick — it’s a legit stain remover. Blot the spill with soda, then dab with a cloth. Works on wine, coffee, and mystery goop.
